Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

The seminar is designed for Ph. D. students of political science with an emphasis on international relations. It should give an opportunity to present and discuss the planned Ph. D. thesis with other students, and to combine the results into a seminar paper.
To increase coherence within the discussion, the respective Ph. D. project should be placed into the context of European security policy, although its topic may not be directly related to it. By correlating the topic with the wider subject of European Security, it might lead to the awareness that security could also be understood in a wider sense than within traditional power politics.
Students will, in a first round, introduce their project and clarify, where necessary, its scope and contents, yet without any discussions in substance. Each presentation should not last longer than 15 minutes. In a second round, students will then present their respective projects more in substance, followed by a discussion. The discussions should serve, on the one hand, the deepening of understanding of the other students for the respective topic, and on the other hand to collect comments and inputs by the other students on the presentation (brainstorming).
Finally, students should prepare a seminar paper of about 25 pages which should present the topic of the planned thesis including the comments, inputs etc. from the discussion, and in view of its relevance for European security policy
Presentation and Discussion
Presentations should include
Topic of the thesis/ subject;
Theory and method;
Guiding question;
Preliminary results of already available;
Relevance of the topic for European security, in correlation to the primary subject of the seminar
Each presentation should have duration of 20 minutes, followed by a 25.minutes discussion.
To enable focused discussion, students might send their presentations already in advance to the other participants of the seminar.
