Framing is a central concept in political communication. Successful framing can decide how a political issue is perceived and which actor’s position wins support by the mass media and the voters. The seminar focuses on the concept of framing in political communication. The seminar covers the history of the concept and the various approaches to framing, with a special emphasis on political issues. Themes to be covered:
What is framing and how does it distinguish itself from related
concepts such as agenda-setting, priming, persuasion, and learning?
Actors and stages of framing processes.
Which different approaches of framing research can be distinguished?
Which mechanisms make framing effective?
How durable are framing effects?
Which factors influence the effectiveness of framing attempts?
Methods of analysing frames and framing processes.
How does the internet change classic framing processes?
Examples of strategic framing attempts in political decision processes, e.g. EU politics, welfare state issues, moral issues, immigration policies.Framing ist ein zentrales Konzept in der politischen Kommunikation. Erfolgreiches Framing kann entscheiden wie ein politisches Issue wahrgenommen wird und welche Akteursposition die Unterstützung der Massenmedien und der Wähler erhält. Das Seminar befasst sich mit dem Framing-Konzept in der politischen Kommunikation. Das Seminar befasst sich mit der Geschichte des Konzepts und den verschiedenen Ansätzen des Framing, mit speziellem Fokus auf das Framing von politischen Issues.

Was ist framing und wie unterschiedet es sich von verwandten Konzepten wie agenda-setting, priming, persuasion und learning.
Akteure und Abschnitte des framing-Prozesses.
Welche unerterschiedlichen Ansätze der framing-Forschung können unterschieden werden?
Welche Mechanismen machen framing effektiv?
Welche Faktoren beeinflussen die Effektivität von framing-Versuchen?
Methoden der Analyse von frames und framing.
Wie verändert das internet die klassischen framing Prozesse?
Exemplarische Diskussion von strategischen framing Bemühungen in politischen Entscheidungsprozessen, z.B. EU-Politik, sozialpolitische Issues, moralische Issues, Immigrationspolitik
