Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

The works of French sociologist Pierre Bourdieu have been highly influential across the social sciences. Yet, while they have been widely used in some disciplines, in others Bourdieu was introduced only relatively recently. Whichever the case, for all disciplines it is crucial to continually reassess how useful Bourdieusian thought can be in explaining important questions of power, culture and social inequality.

This theory seminar will examine some of Bourdieu’s most central concepts, including habitus, field, capital, and symbolic violence and contextualize them against the background of students’ research foci. Through individually assigned readings and presentations, we will critically discuss the utility of Bourdieusian concepts in the current environment, and probe their relevance to various disciplines. Upon completing the seminar, you should have an advanced understanding of key Bourdieusian concepts and how his framework can be applied across the social sciences.
