Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

In recent decades, biographical approaches in the humanities, cultural studies and social sciences have experienced an unprecedented upswing, which requires a thorough theoretical-methodological reflection of concepts and materials of biographical research from a cross-disciplinary perspective. This concerns, to name just a few examples, the boom and change of the concept of persona in the history of knowledge and science, but also the increased examination of the autobiographical practices of historical protagonists, for example in the context of transnational history. One form of autobiographical practice is the 'estate consciousness' that has recently been the subject of discussion, especially in literary studies research contexts, and which can be classified as a specific expression of individualisation processes in modernity. Against this background, the plurality and heterogeneity of the legacies of historical protagonists pose great challenges to researchers in various historical-cultural studies fields, even if they are not directly aimed at biographical questions.

Assessment and permitted materials

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

The course puts theoretical perspectives on biographical material up for discussion, but also reflects on associated working techniques as well as research-systematic and research-ethical questions. The discussion of texts read by all in advance and the reflection on auto/biographical aspects in the dissertations of the participants are at the centre of the course.
