Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

This seminar is directed to doctoral students (guests are welcome by prior arrangement). We will explore together the business of academic writing and discuss the different contexts for the dissemination of research in the fields of historical and cultural studies (including Byzantine Studies): conferences, academic journals, edited volumes, academic monographs, funding applications, job applications. We will also take a behind-the-scenes look at the decision-making processes that are involved.
Aims, Methods: The seminar is intended to de-mystify the processes of establishing an academic profile as a young researcher. Contents and discussions will tailored to the needs and interests of the participants.

Assessment and permitted materials

Attendance at all meetings and participation in the discussion, on the basis of the preparations for all sessions (40%). Presentation of a selection of three written assignments (20% each).

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

In the case of an unavoidable absence, the instructor must be notified prior to the session. No more than two absences are permitted. All written assignments must be submitted by mail one day before the relevant seminar meeting, i.e. Tuesday, 9.00 am.

Examination topics

Students’ own contributions to the discussion and written work.

Reading list

Recommended readings will be communicated in the course of the semester.
