Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

Scholars have been aware of the inspiration Canadian fiction writers found in the works of William Faulkner, Eudora Welty, Flannery O’Connor, and Canadian authors themselves have acknowledged their debt in essays and interviews. This seminar for advanced students, doctoral candidates and M.A. students will offer an opportunity to consider intertextual relationships between the fiction of, for instance, Alice Munro, Jack Hodgins, Aritha van Herk and others and the narrative art of distinguished Southern authors until the present.
There will also be an attempt to examine literary texts of authors who crossed the border between the two countries and came to reside in the other region as did, for instance, Elizabeth Spencer and Clark Blaise. Additionally, the reciprocal exchange of other modes and art forms will be studied. Keeping in mind that the culture of the Cajuns in Louisiana is an offshoot of the ethnic heritage of the Acadiens we will also reflect on the interconnections between the Maritimes and the Deep South.
During the seminar, participants will also benefit from the expertise of a leading scholar in Southern literature and culture, Robert Brinkmeyer, Director of Research at the University of South Carolina in Columbia, SC, who is expected to participate in the seminar in June.

Assessment and permitted materials

Participants will be asked to prepare an oral presentation on the topic chosen, to be followed by a short paper. They will also be requested to produce two abstracts of seminar sessions leading up to the international colloquium.

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

To alert advanced students to the significance of the transcultural exchange between the American South and Canada and to appreciate major fictional texts from the two large regions of North America.
The participants in the seminar will be alerted to the lectures and debates of international experts who will come to Vienna in late September 2010 for an international colloquium on the subject of “Cultural Circulation between Canada and the American South” (Sept. 24- 26).

Examination topics

Seminar participants will present their research papers, or drafts of relevant diploma papers or doctoral theses. An intense debate of a number of relevant texts will be encouraged.

Reading list

Participants in the seminar will need to acquire a Reader (in two parts) containing a number of texts illustrating this cultural exchange, and paperback copies of two novels (William Faulkner "Absalom, Absalom!" and Jack Hodgins "The Invention of the World").
