Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

Transdisciplinary performance studies understand culture as something produced through actions and interactions. Reciprocal effects are usually assumed, as Dwight Conquergood succinctly put it: "Culture performs and articulates us as much as we enact and embody its evanescent qualities". Artistic performances such as concerts and performances of all kinds, but also social, political and religious events such as sporting events, ceremonies or rituals are thus among the favoured areas of investigation, alongside questions of identity linked to sensory and physical action, which are usually questioned using a mixture of research methods.
The seminar will discuss basic positions of performance studies and selected methodological reflections on the one hand, and the use of corresponding theories and methods in the context of cultural studies dissertation projects on the other.
The seminar also serves as a networking opportunity for doctoral students who will gather in the Music, Theatre and Performance Studies section of the faculty's Doc School during the summer term, opening up a range of new spaces for doctoral students (workshops, guest lectures, peer groups, etc.).

Assessment and permitted materials

During the semester, all students provide at least two different pieces of work ( impulse talk, reading response, presentation), which together with the commitment in the discussions result in the grade.

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

Regular and active attendance in the course as well as two partial achievements are prerequisites for the positive completion of the seminar.
