Aims, contents and method of the course

This course discusses the different forms of imagined identities and the shapes of these phenomena. Identity is not understood as a given fact but as a a relational phenomenon emerging from diverse genealogies. The course will engage with these genalogies and the - always dynamic - results. Colonial modernity is an indispensable part of the discussion. Case studies are Europe, China, India, masculinity, the Islamic world in its diversity, and the Orient.
Due to the COVID-19 situation, the course may have to change to an online format.

Participation and writing a paper are necessary. The paper will be graded according to its quality (form, language, originality)ö

Reading list

There is no fixed list of texts to be studied since the course will move along the interests of the students. Thus, different texts will be relevant. In the first session, we will define the texts.
