Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

Knowledge is continuously evolving over time and so are the forms in which we present scientific insights and results. While Goethe presented biological observations as poems, contemporary poets often write poetry with the vocabulary and syntax of scientific texts.
This seminar wants to make you aware of how much scientific praxis is influenced by historic and societal surroundings and help you to develop your own personal style of communication, be it to peers or larger, non-academic audiences.

Assessment and permitted materials

Participation in discussions; oral presentation and/or written assignment.

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

Aims of the seminar are to reappraise the conventional demarcations between science and art and to consider to what extent these 'two cultures' can be translated into one another.
Students will be encouraged to explore new ways of conceptualising and communicating their research and results.

Examination topics

Keynote presentations. Research methods and/or results to be discussed and presented using a variety of media such as film, video, painting, music and other creative or innovative text forms. Those who wish may of course use conventional discourse types.
