Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

As is well known, Sigmund Freud himself tackled the scope of psychoanalysis into a general theory of human culture by studying contemporary anthropology and placing the findings of psychoanalysis within this framework. At the same time, Freud also dealt with literature and the visual arts and understood them both as illustrations and as evidence or as patterns of interpretation of his own theory.
Against a broader theoretical background (see bibliography), the seminar aims to clarify the status of psychoanalysis for the theory and methodology of literary studies and to clarify Freud's understanding of literary texts. The focus is not on biographistic interpretations, but on an understanding of literature as a product of the "aesthetic unconscious" (Rancière). For this reason, Lacan's attempt to revise Freud's point of view – correction and return – is of crucial importance, as Lacan's famous analysis of Poe's "The Stolen Letter" makes clear. For Lacan, who dealt extensively with the linguistic structuralism of his time the unconscious works like a language.
The aim of the seminar is the practical and systematic practice of psychoanalytic methods of interpretation, beyond the widespread unsystematic and biographically turned psychologization ('repression', projection', etc.).
