Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

Transdisciplinary performance studies understand culture as something produced through actions and interactions. In everyday situations, in social, political or religious events, ceremonies or rituals as well as in performances with an artistic framework, cultural negotiation processes take place in which realities are created between sensual-bodily action and acts of perception.
On the one hand, the seminar follows the development of theories of performance studies on the basis of Simon Shepherd’s Cambridge Introduction to Performance Theory; on the other hand, we explore the potential of performance theory for the dissertation projects of the seminar participants.
In the joint reading of Shepherd’s volume, each group will take on one of the three parts (Part I: Definitions of Performance, pp. 1-54; Part II: The emergence of performance as sensuous practice, pp. 55-136; Part III: Theorizing performance, pp. 137-220) in order to trace lines of argumentation and formulate open questions for further discussion. In the exploration of the dissertation projects, these will be presented according to the state of work and then discussed in general as well as specifically in their affinity to aspects of performance theory.
The seminar will be held in German and English, depending on individual language skills and the composition of the group.
The special feature of the seminar is that, after an organizational meeting in October, it will be held as a block retreat with two overnight stays in January. This will take place in Podersdorf am See at Lakeside77, where a seminar room (https://www.lakeside77.at/seminarraum/) and rooms are reserved for us (https://www.lakeside77.at/galerie/). The travel costs (Vienna-Podersdorf), the two overnight stays at Lakeside77 (double room in single occupancy) and meals (breakfast and dinner, the latter without drinks, on January 17 and 18, snacks and drinks during breaks from January 16-18) will be covered by the budget of the Doc-School section "Musicology, Theater and Performance Studies". However, the assumption of costs is linked to membership of the Doctoral School of Philological and Cultural Studies (registration via ds.philkult@univie.ac.at).

Assessment and permitted materials

During the semester, all students complete at least two different pieces of work (impulse presentation, reading response, feedbacks, presentation), which, together with their involvement in the discussions, result in a grade.

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

All participants must find time for the preliminary meeting on 10 October from 15:00 to 16:30, and the retreat from Thursday 16 January 2025 from 10:00 in Podersdorf (organized arrival expected at 08:18 from Vienna Central Station) until 16:00 on 18 January 2025 (organized return journey expected to end at 17:45 at Vienna Central Station). The special organizational form of the seminar leaves no room for partial participation, so please refrain from such requests.
The assessment takes into account the ability to
- read academic texts from the field of performance theory accurately and in a question-led manner
- present the dissertation project in a pointed manner,
- give productive feedback.
