Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

This semester course will provide an introduction to Bosonic String Theory.

We will present the basic steps
- Nabu-Goto and Polyakov actions
- Symmetries
- Light cone quantization
- Spectrum (Tachyon!)

we will explore some special spaces
- Compact dimensions
- Orbifolds/Orientifolds (Bosonic open strings/D-branes)

finishing with the first and simplest string amplitude
- 1-loop bosonic amplitudes (the partition function)

A 2nd semester is expected where superstring theory and realizations of the Standard Model in String Theory will be covered.

Assessment and permitted materials

There will be a number of homework problems during the semester, and discussed and solved at the blackboard by the students. There will be a written test in the last unit.

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

Requirements: solid background in Quantum mechanics and Electromagnetism.
Quantum field theory is highly recommended.

Examination topics

Lecture notes.

Reading list

Lecture notes will be provided.
