Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

Globular clusters are dense, massive star clusters found in all types of galaxies and their study is relevant for a large number of topics in astrophysics, including stellar evolution, galaxy evolution, dynamics and stellar populations.

The seminar aims to highlight the importance of globular clusters as a topic of study in astrophysics. The goal of this course is to equip students with a broad knowledge of the properties of globular clusters and globular cluster systems and the methods used to study and analyse them (photometry, spectroscopy, dynamical modelling, theoretical and observational techniques).

Topics that will be covered include:
- Spatially resolved globular clusters in the Milky Way: Colour-magnitude diagrams, kinematics, exotic stellar populations.
- Extragalactic globular cluster systems: Colour distributions, accretion histories, simulations, high redshift observations.

The course will be a mixture of lectures to introduce various topics, open discussion of relevant literature and time to work on small projects (literature research as well as data analysis projects).

Assessment and permitted materials

Assessment will be out of 100 points:
- 60 points for a final presentation of the project (with slides)
- 40 points for literature reviewing and subsequent discussions during the lectures.
Detailed criteria for evaluating the presentations will be provided in the course.

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

Students must attend at least 80% of the lectures (including the final presentations; any difficulties should be communicated in advance). They must also submit and present the final presentation of the small project.

If they fulfil these requirements, then the grading will be:
90 - 100 points = 1
80 - 89 points = 2
70 - 79 points = 3
60 - 69 points = 4
0 - 59 points = 5
