Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

Galaxies continuously grow through the conversion of gas into stars and via accretion of stars through merging with satellite galaxies. While the stars can be described as a collisionless dynamical system, the gas in and around galaxies behaves thermodynamically. This seminar will introduce theoretical principles of stellar and gas dynamics as well as related observational signatures at different wavelengths. The course consists of lectures plus presentations and is suitable for PhD and MSc students in Astronomy.

Assessment and permitted materials

Assessment of students performances will be based on presence (minimum 80%), active participation and oral presentation. The latter presentation is on a topic covered by the course which the students choose after the introduction lecture. The students prepare their presentation based on the lecture notes as well as literature publications on the chosen topic.
