Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

An integral field spectrograph is a powerful instrument combining spectrographic and imaging capabilities often through an integral field unit (IFU). The resulting 3D IFU data cubes provide in one go spatially resolved spectra of astronomical objects (but are also employed in for example bio-medical imaging and Earth remote sensing). The aim of this seminar is to get acquainted with integral-field spectroscopy, including hands-on experience with state-of-the-art IFU data from the MAGPI survey (https://magpisurvey.org) for small research projects.

Assessment and permitted materials

The assessment will be based on active participation, i.e., contributing to the discussions through asking questions and providing input via hands-on exercises and a research project.

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

The seminars are in English. The presentation of at least one research project is required.

Examination topics

Understanding and analysis of 3D data of galaxies.

Reading list

Potential reading materials will be suggested during the seminars.
