Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

While doctoral students are necessarily specialized in their research to become experts, the Big Picture Seminar motivates the students to put their results into a broader perspective and expose them to the wider scientific community and society at large. Interdisciplinary teams of students from all scientific fields of our faculty plan and organize several public scientific talks of world leading international experts on an interdisciplinary theme relevant for the Faculty of Earth Sciences, Geography and Astronomy and the Vienna International School of Earth and Space Sciences.

Assessment and permitted materials

Each doctoral student is encouraged to organise and host at least once with a team of students a public talk addressing one of the overarching topics of the Faculty of Earth Sciences, Geography and Astronomy and the Vienna International School of Earth and Space Sciences. The team of students must have members from all three branches of the school. Frequent attendance with active participation in the discussions is expected.

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

The meetings are in English. A minimum participation of 75% is required as well as active participation in the discussions and organisation.

Examination topics

Current research topics in the field of Earth and Space Sciences.

Reading list

Potential reading materials will be suggested in the meeting announcements.
