Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

In this course, the basic linguistic knowledge already acquired in the StEOP phase is to be consolidated and deepened with the material of the modern target languages.
If not yet completed, simultaneous attendance of the lecture on Synchronous Linguistics of the target language is strongly recommended, which deals with the same content as the PS.
The proseminar has an explicit overview character. Besides the constitutive levels of language (phonetics/phonology, prosody, morphology and word formation, syntax and lexicology), it also deals with the basics of structuralist linguistics (language as a system, language functions, linguistic sign and its features), its schools and some selected approaches.
But also the basics of dialectology, diachronic linguistics, phraseology, as well as lexicography belong to the contents of the course.
This content is reviewed and consolidated in independent revision in corresponding exercises throughout the semester.
In the proseminar, basic scientific working techniques are also successively taught and practised.
The proseminar has a clearly interactive character, whereby group work (presentations, discussions, joint discussion of the selected specialist texts) and independent preparation and follow-up permanently complement each other (cf. also below).
The overall grade is cumulative and is made up of the grades of the individual partial performances (cf. below).
Detailed list of topics will be announced at the beginning of the semester (learning platform).

Assessment and permitted materials

The list of partial performances below normally refers to the format of face-to-face teaching.
Partial performances:
In addition to regular active participation, participants should:
- write a transcript of one of the sessions each (they will be placed in the corresponding folder on the learning platform - further information and instructions will be provided at the beginning of the semester via the learning platform);
- independently analyse 1-2 smaller specialist texts on one of the areas of linguistics (a selection of such texts, with commentary, will be made available on the learning platform);
- do independent exercises on the individual sub-areas of the proseminar (these will also be made available on the platform);
- take 4 small intermediate tests on the individual sections of the proseminar (phonetics, syntax, vocabulary);
- prepare a presentation on a selected sub-topic of the course (formal requirements / instructions will be announced on the learning platform);
- write contributions to the discussion on the presentations/thesis papers of other participants;
- pass a final test (on the contents of the course);
- write a paper on the chosen topic (deadline for submission is 31.08.2023; formal requirements for this and other written work will be announced via the learning platform).
