Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

The lecture delves into the phenomenon and significance of oral literature, with a particular focus on Serbian epic poetry spanning from the Middle Ages to the era of the Serbian Uprisings in the 19th century. In addition to allowing students to get acquainted with fundamental concepts in literary history, poetry, and theory, the lecture will also shed light on the context of collecting, editing, publishing, and popularising oral literature. Additionally, it will introduce them to key historical figures in this field, such as Petar Hektorović, Vuk Stefanović Karadžić and Valtazar Bogišić. Individual units will be devoted to the close reading of the selected epic poems (in BCS) with students.
