Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

This course introduces contemporary approaches to quantitative and computational methods in linguistics and literary studies. The course will consist of two thematic blocks. First, we will focus on corpus linguistics and discuss how the use of corpus data can enhance research in various areas of theoretical linguistics, such as grammaticalization, semantic change, sociolinguistics, and construction grammar. The second part of the course is devoted to quantitative methods in literary studies, such as distant reading, digital critical editions, and stylometry.

Assessment and permitted materials

During the course, each student will be required to complete a small research project according to their research interests. The projects will be presented during the final colloquium.

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

The final assessment is based on three criteria: class participation (0.5), work on the project during the semester (0.3) and project presentation (0.2).

Examination topics

Reading list

The reading list will be provided after the first week and will be based on the background and research interests of the seminar participants.
