Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

The course will offer an introduction to Dubrovnik’s baroque literature. The main focus is going to lie on Ivan Gundulić’s (1589-1638) play Dubravka. Being a text of seminal importance, the play will serve as a blueprint for the analysis of numerous important traits of Dubrovnik’s literary baroque: its genres, settings, characteristic themes, versification system, social functions, etc. The students will not only get acquainted with the original text through a series of close readings but also, this text is going to lead toward a wider historical, cultural, and political context. Finally, the students will be introduced to certain fundamental theoretical concepts developed by “new historicism”, which are going to offer them analytical tools and perspectives on how to approach literary works that appertain to older BCMS literature. The course thus has three main aims: to offer an in-depth analysis of Gundulić’s Dubravka, to reconstruct the traits of Dubrovnik’s baroque culture based on elements offered by the text, and to problematize our contemporary reading strategies of 17th-century literature.
