Aims, contents and method of the course

Goals:
The course introduces students to Slovenian dramatic literature produced in the century since the end of the First World War through a detailed analysis of individual literary movements. Particular emphasis is also placed on the analysis of contemporary theatrical practices that took over the performing arts in the 1980s and 1990s.
Content:
Slovenian social drama, inter-war church and partisan stages, post-World War II political drama, and two key trends in Slovenian drama: poetic drama and the drama of the absurd. An analysis of contemporary theatre practices that took over the primacy of the performing arts in the 1980s and 1990s. In the context of the discussion on Slovenian drama, an introduction to the social infrastructure that accompanies drama, namely institutions, festivals, prizes, etc.
Methods:
Lectures (15 meetings in 4 blocks - once a month) on selected topics and independent reading of the items listed in the syllabus. Students practise conceptual reflection, scientific dialogue and questioning. At the end of the semester, students make oral presentations on previously selected and approved topics, which they elaborate in a proseminar paper (12-15 pp.).

Assessment and permitted materials

The course will be assessed by active participation during lectures, written Proseminar work (12-15 pp.) and an oral presentation (Referat) of a selected and previously approved topic.

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

Successful completion of the examination requires a general knowledge of the literary and historical topics covered in the lectures, participation in the discussions, a successful oral presentation and a properly prepared proseminar assignment.
