Aims, contents and method of the course

Goals:
The course Ältere slowenische Literatur im Überblick provides an overview introduction to older Slovenian literature, covering it from its beginnings to the Enlightenment and the Pre-Romantic period. It will also place the study of Slovenian literature within the broader framework of world literature, drawing attention to the web of interconnections between literature and social, philosophical, religious, political and other artistic currents within a particular era.
Content:
The origins of the first writings in the Old Slovene language, the stimulating beginnings of literary activity in the 16th century and the further development of Slovene literature until the transition to Romanticism.
Methods:
Lectures (15 meetings in 4 blocks - once a month) on selected topics and independent reading of the items listed in the work plan (syllabus).

Assessment and permitted materials

A written final examination (5 questions, 20 points each) on the content of the lectures and on independent reading of the required literature. The first examination date will be on the day of the last meeting. The remaining dates will be announced later on the IS website.

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

Successful completion of the examination requires a general knowledge of the individual literary-historical periods, as well as of the Slovene authors and works produced in them and their idiosyncratic characteristics.
