Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

The term heritage language refers to a (minority) language learned by its speakers at home as children, but never fully developed because of various (socio-)linguistic factors. The speakers grow up with a different dominant language.
In this course, the theoretical framework concerning heritage languages and the linguistic peculiarities of heritage speakers of Polish (especially with German as a dominant language) will be discussed and analyzed. We will investigate the linguistic reasons for the differences between Standard and Heritage Polish and deal with different theories and models.

Assessment and permitted materials

For passing the class, students are required to contribute actively to the course (discussion, content-relevant participation, homework), to create a bibliography, to present a paper (in about 20 minutes; in the case of her or his being prevented, the student must submit the presentation in written form and introduce it in one of the following classes), and to write a paper (approx. 12–15 pages whereby 1 standard page = 1800 characters including spaces). To ensure good scientific practice, the course lecturer can provide an oral reflection of the seminar paper submitted, which is relevant for the final assessment. The paper itself must be completed by June 30th, 2022, but must be handed in by August 31st, 2022 at the latest.

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

The final grade is calculated as follows: a bibliography (10%), active contribution, and discussion (20%), presentation (20%), paper (50%). For passing the class, at least more than 50% must be achieved.
