Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

Poland is considered a linguistically homogeneous country, although there are many national and ethnic minorities such as the Lemkos, the ethnic-religious group of the Karaites, Kashubians, or Silesians. All of these groups have their languages, but not all of them are recognized as such. In the seminar, we, therefore, want to look at these languages and their status and explore the controversial question of when we can consider a language as an independent language and as a dialect.

Assessment and permitted materials

To pass the class, students are required to contribute actively to the course (discussion, content-relevant participation, homework), to create a bibliography, to present a paper (in about 20 minutes; in the case of her or his being prevented, the student must submit the presentation in written form and introduce it in one of the following classes), and to write a paper (approx. 12–15 pages whereby 1 standard page = 1800 characters including spaces). To ensure good scientific practice, the course lecturer can provide an oral reflection on the seminar paper submitted, which is relevant for the final assessment. The paper itself must be completed by June 30th, 2024, but must be handed in by August 31st, 2024 at the latest.

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

The final grade is calculated as follows: bibliography (10%), active contribution, and discussion (20%), presentation (20%), paper (50%). For passing the class, at least more than 50% must be achieved.
