Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

The course focuses on the poetry of Miloš Crnjanski and provides an overview of poetic movements and shifts in 20th century Serbian literature.

Miloš Crnjanski was born in Csongrad (Austria-Hungary) in 1893. He published his first poem "Sudba" in 1908 and his second poem "U početku beše sjaj" in 1912. His first book of poems, "Lirika Itake", was published after the end of the First World War, in which Crnjanski fought on the Austro-Hungarian side in Galicia and was wounded in 1915. The Serbian Ulysses returned to Belgrade in 1919 and wrote the following lines: "Na Itaki i ja bih da ubijam, / al’ kad se ne sme, / bar da zapevam / malo nove pesme. " ("Prolog"). "Lirika Itake" as well as his poem "Sumatra" and essay-manifesto "Objašnjenje Sumatre" mark the first phase of this author’s work. Later in the interwar period, Crnjanski published two significant poems: "Stražilovo" (1921) and "Serbia" (1925). These poems, together with his translations of poems from ancient China ("Antologija kineske lirike," 1923) and Japan ("Pesme starog Japana," 1928), define the second phase of Crnjanski’s poetic oeuvre. The last phase includes only one poem – "Lament nad Beogradom" (1954/1962), written in exile in London after Crnjanski had not published any poetry for almost 30 years. As the last poem of his career, "Lament nad Beogradom" is considered Crnjanski’s "swan song".
