Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

In this course, students will be familiarised with basic theoretical models of semiotic text and image analysis. In addition to the theoretical approach, the practical application of the models will be pursued in concrete work with selected Czech, Polish and Slovak song lyrics and advertising texts. Students will be required to present their individual topics clearly and critically with the help of specialist literature and to summarise them in a written paper by the end of the course.
Seminars are conversational courses with continuous assessment. They also provide an opportunity for in-depth discussion of exemplary topics and individual academic papers. The aim is to deepen previously acquired knowledge of Slavic linguistics, including questions of current scientific discourse, as well as the professional presentation of research results, both orally and in writing.

Assessment and permitted materials

In courses with continuous assessment, students have to fulfil several oral and/or written requirements, including active personal contributions (discussion, homework, compulsory participation), the professional presentation of a scientific topic (in approx. 30 minutes) as well as the writing of an individual seminar paper (approx. 25 pages, where 1 standard page = 1800 characters including spaces). In order to ensure good academic practice, the lecturer may provide for an oral reflection on the submitted seminar paper, which will be relevant for the final assessment. The assignment itself should be completed by 30 June 2025, but must be handed in no later than 15 September 2025.

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

In order to pass the course, students are required to actively participate in the course (discussion, homework, compulsory participation), to give a presentation (approximately 30 minutes; if the student is prevented from doing so, he/she must submit the presentation in writing and present it in one of the following classes) and to write a seminar paper (approximately 25 pages, where 1 standard page = 1800 characters including spaces). The seminar paper (including any oral reflection) is worth 50 points, the presentation 20 points. In addition, 30 points will be awarded for individual active contribution to the course. In order to pass the course, more than half of the total number of possible points must be achieved. The other half can be divided into four quarters, each of which is used to calculate the final grade.

Examination topics

The content of the examination consists of the linguistic issues analysed or presented by means of a repertoire of methods from semiotic text and image analysis and, where applicable, the linguistic phenomena covered in the individual West Slavic languages.

Reading list

For the course, appropriate documents will be made available electronically via the Moodle platform. Literature for the preparation of the individual presentations and the composition of the papers is to be consulted on a topic-specific basis. Useful hints can be found in the documents provided or in the publications mentioned in the respective course units.
