Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

The aims of the course are
-- to introduce the topic of "Schulentwicklung" (school development) in the Austrian context
-- to give students basic understanding of and insight into empirical research, basic approaches and research methods,
-- to give students insights into the Austrian school-reality,
-- to develop students' ability to define and work with research questions,
-- to develop students' ability to construct an adequate research design and apply it in practice,
-- to develop students' ability to document and present research results transparently.
-- to carry out an empirical study in cooperation with a school

Course methods include:
-- theoretical input
-- project work
-- individual and group work
-- group discussions
-- learning-by-doing

Language of the course: English and German

Assessment and permitted materials

Assignment criteria (practical placement)
-- active participation in an empirical study (data collection on eLearning in the form of lesson observations/interviews/questionnaire)

Assignment criteria (PS)
-- end-term research report (collaborative written assignment) (50%)
-- presentation (collaborative work) (20%)
-- participation in in-class and online discussions / activities, including a final written reflection (individual work) (30%)
To complete the course, all areas of assessment must be positive.

Assessment will be based on students' ability to
-- understand and work towards the aims of the course,
-- understand and follow guidelines (project, assignments, assessment criteria),
-- implement theory into practice,
-- think critically,
-- construct and express clear arguments,
-- work independently and in groups,
-- organize their time and keep deadlines.

To complete the course, all areas of assessment must be positive.

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

Minimum requirements
In order to pass the course students must
-- carry out (parts of) an empirical study which involves data collection at a school, i.e. "Kooperationsschule" (eLearning)
— write an end-term research report (collaborative work)
— deliver an in-class presentation (collaborative work)
— actively participate in class with relevant contributions
— complete on- and offline assignments
-- be present in all sessions (attendance must be 100%, exceptions may apply)

Assignment criteria (practical placement)
-- active participation in an empirical study (data collection in the form of lesson observation on Inquiry Based Learning)
