    Aims, contents and method of the course

    The aims of the course are to
    -- introduce selected aspects of empirical research, basic approaches, and research methods,
    -- provide insights into Austrian schools,
    -- develop students' ability to work with research questions,
    -- develop students' ability to effectively implement a research design in practice,
    -- develop students' ability to document and present research results transparently,
    -- carry out an empirical study in cooperation with a school

    Course methods include:
    -- theoretical input
    -- project work
    -- individual and collaborative work
    -- plenum discussions

    Project work focus: Defined by the co-operation school
    Language of instruction: English and German

    Assessment and permitted materials

    Assignment criteria (practical placement)
    — active participation in carrying out an empirical study (data collection and documentation)

    Assignment criteria (PS)
    — end-term research report (collaborative written assignment, 40 points)
    — presentation (collaborative work, 20 points)
    — meaningful participation in discussions, activities, and decision making processes (individual work, 30 points)
    — assignments (individual work, 10 points)

    To complete the course, all areas of assessment must be positive.

    Assessment will be based on students' ability to
    — understand and work towards the aims of the course,
    — understand and follow guidelines (project, assignments, assessment criteria),
    — implement theory into practice,
    — think critically,
    — construct and express clear arguments,
    — work independently and in groups,
    — organize their time and keep deadlines.

    Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

    Minimum requirements
    In order to pass the course students must
    — carry out (parts of) an empirical study which involves data collection at a school, i.e. "Kooperationsschule"
    — write an end-term research report (collaborative work)
    — deliver an in-class presentation (collaborative work)
    — regularly participate in class with relevant contributions (discussions, activities, decision making-processes)
    — complete on- and offline assignments
    — attend all session (attendance must be 100%)

    1 (Excellent): 100-90 points
    2 (Good): 89-81 points
    3 (Satisfactory): 80-71 points
    4 (Sufficient): 70-60 points
    5 (Insufficient): 59-0 points
