Aims, contents and method of the course

The purpose of this journal club is to explore new trends in micro- and optomechanical systems as well as to scan the different methodologies applied this context. The journal club aims to inspire the transfer of methods and is targeted at students that are actively engaged in research with mechanical systems.

Topics may include:
· Micro-Mechanical System Characterization
· Micro-Electro-Mechanical Systems (MEMS)
· Micro-Opto-Mechanical Systems
· Micro-Opto-Electro-Mechanical Systems
Optical, magnetic and electrostatic levitation
· Performance and Limitations of Micro-Mechanical Systems
· Mechanical Properties and Behavior (Scaling, Friction & Damping)
Active control of micromechanical systems
· Sensors and Actuators
· Mechanical bits
· Thermodynamics of mechanical systems
· Future directions and open questions

Assessment and permitted materials

* Oral presentation
* Participation in >80% of all meetings

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

* Quality of presentation with respect to timing, clarity of explanation, quality of slides, relevance of selected content for the predefined topic.

* Active participation in meetings by contribution to the discussion
