Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

We will first review the basics of quantum measurement theory and of optical microscopy. Then we will discuss approaches that demonstrate quantum enhanced sensitivity and resolution in imaging and microscopy.
The topics that will be discussed include:
1. Quantum metrology:
a. Fisher information and parameter estimation
b. Quantum enhanced metrology with Schrödinger cat-like states
c. Squeezed states for quantum metrology
d. Multi-photon and higher order correlations
2. Basics of Microscopy
a. Resolution and sensitivity limits in Microscopy
b. Phase microscopy
c. Fluorescence Microscopy

Assessment and permitted materials

Each week one student prepares and delivers a talk (~45 min) on a recent article. A list of articles will be provided.

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

Basic knowledge in classical and quantum optics.

The grading will be based on the presentation, as well as on the contributions to the discussions during the seminar.

Examination topics

Basics of quantum measurement theory and optical microscopy. Modern approaches that offer quantum enhanced sensitivity in an imaging context.
