Seminar = Course with continuous assessment! Therefore:
• Attendance is compulsory during the whole semester.
• Absence is only possible with a justified & timely excuse.
• Unexcused absence at the first meeting = deregistration.
• Any unexcused absence in the further course of the semester = negative assessment.

Aims, contents and method of the course

Objective:
Through this seminar, students gain a fundamental understanding of scientific publishing and the various aspects attached to it, with a focus on Analytical Chemistry.
This can be useful, e.g., in writing the master thesis or own publications.

Content:
• Familiarization with the scientific publication system
• Critical analysis of scientific publications
• Practicing oral presentations & asking questions

Method:
• Presentation of selected scientific publications from the field of analytical chemistry by the students
• Subsequent critical discussion with all seminar participants
• Talking about the individual parts of scientific publications
• Discussion of selected aspects from the area of scientific writing and publishing

Assessment and permitted materials

Assessment criteria:
• Literature search
• Presentation (Powerpoint or similar)
• Active participation (e.g. contribution to discussions)
• In case of doubt, the students may be asked to a grade-relevant final oral assessment.

Permitted aids:
Will be discussed in the seminar.

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

Minimum requirements:
• Course with continuous assessment. Therefore: Attendance during the entire semester (exceptions only with justified & timely apologies)
• Presentation of the respective publication

Assessment criteria:
• Quality of the presentation
• Quantity & quality of participation in discussions
• Quality of literature research

Examination topics

• Own presentation
• Active participation
