Aims, contents and method of the course

Lipidomics is the science that deals with the concentration-dependent description of hydrophobic biomolecules in space and time in a specific system. The students are taught analytical procedures in mass spectrometry-based lipidomics. Lipidomics applications are explained using accessible examples. This will give you a broad understanding of mass spectrometric strategies, which you can also apply in other fields of chemistry such as food chemistry, biochemistry or organic chemistry.
You acquire the ability to work out the knowledge of different modules of complex analytical experiments and therefore you will develop an understanding how to design experimental workflows e.g. used in different studies.
In this course, the following topics (areas) are presented or jointly developed: lipid structure and function, lipid nomenclature, extraction and sample preparation, separation techniques in lipid analysis, mass spectrometric methods, evaluation strategies for identification and quantification. Critical examination of this topics, followed by a scientific discussion of research results.
The contents of the courses are worked out through lectures, discussions, oral presentations and minutes. The presentation includes a lecture with presentation slides (20 min) and a subsequent discussion (10 min). Current publications in the scientific literature with an analytical-chemical focus on lipidomics are discussed by students studying chemistry with a focus on analytical chemistry. The discussion takes place in the group as well as with the other participants from related disciplines.

Assessment and permitted materials

Type of performance control:
• Participation in the discussion
• Oral presentation of a chosen topic during the seminar
• Answering the questions in the discussion
• Timely submission of a topic-specific protocol
To ensure good scientific practice, the course management can invite students to a grade-relevant discussion after the presentation and submission of the minutes, which must be completed positively.

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

Minimum requirements:
Attendance at the first unit of the seminar is compulsory. The attendance must be 75% fulfilled.
To achieve a positive grade, 50% / 60% of the maximum possible number of points must be achieved. Each part of the performance must be completed at the end of the course.
Assessment standard
100 points can be achieved for this course. These are divided into:
• Participation: 30 points
• Oral presentation and questions: 40 points
• Minutes / questions on the topic: 30 points
The grades are awarded according to the following point scheme:
• 1 (very good): 100 - 91 points
• 2 (good): 90-81 points
• 3 (satisfactory): 80-71 points
• 4 (sufficient): 70-61 points
• 5 (insufficient): 60-0 points
