Aims, contents and method of the course

The seminar will cover the basic principles of academic publishing (with an emphasis on peer-reviewed journal articles).
The aim of the course is for students to have a working knowledge of:
.) Impact of different article types (e.g., original articles, review studies)
.) Journal selection procedure
.) Differences in writing style of manuscripts intended for academic journals or other formats (e.g. books, etc.)
.) Publication ethics
.) The peer review process
.) Dealing with referees’ comments
The seminar will have a hands-on approach to the subject, which will be ensured through the following activities
.) Presentation and discussion of draft publications in the field of doctoral theses
.) Exchange of knowledge between experts (e.g., editors)
.) Inviting participants to bring their own manuscripts - these will be analysed together in the course

Assessment and permitted materials

As part of the seminar, participants should submit the draft of a manuscript (e.g. article, book chapter, special issue for a journal; draft for a symposium for a conference)

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

50% of the assessment: Active participation in the interactive sessions, including a short presentation
30% assessment of the manuscript
20% peer review
