Aims, contents and method of the course

The conference of the European Academy of Religion (EuARe) will take place at the University of Vienna from 8 July to 12 July 2025. EuARe offers students the opportunity to gain practical experience in the organisation of academic conferences. The course focuses on areas such as Supervision of the event rooms (including technical), registration and welcoming guests, general organisational tasks, supervision of side events, etc. These organisational areas are then carried out independently by a Student Organising Committee. In addition, the course also offers general insights into the organisational side of scientific conferences.
The participation fees for the conference are not charged for all students who take part in the course.
1st session: Introduction, getting to know each other, overview; the role of specialised conferences in academic discourse
2nd session: English course - Academic English; insight into the work timetable, introduction to group work
3rd session: Discussion of work timetable during the conference
4th session: First aid training from the Red Cross
5th session: Tour and technical training, clarification of open questions with the organisation team

Creditable package to accompany the EuARe 20225 conference (https://www.europeanacademyofreligion.org/euare2025) for students in the doctoral program in Philosophy (SPL 43) :
• Participation in the sessions of the seminar Organization of a scientific conference (https://ufind.univie.ac.at/de/course.html?lv=602001&semester=2025S - please register, then communication is easier) (21 hours in total)
• Help with the preparation of the conference (tasks of no more than 5 hours)
• Participation and assistance on 2 conference days (or 1 day + 2 half days, or equivalent) (with special allocation to sections with philosophical content) (about 21 hours)
• Writing reflections on selected panel presentations (4-6 pages)

Students in the doctoral program in Philosophy (SPL 43) receive 4 ECTS for this package

Assessment and permitted materials

Assessment will be based on a series of tasks to be completed during the different phases of the conference’s organisation and implementation.
This includes a written reflection on four conference presentations (approx. 4-6 pages).

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

Attendance and active participation during the conference week (July 8-12, 2025) are mandatory for successful completion of the course. The course instructor reserves the right to invite students to an evaluative discussion about their completed tasks. Instances of plagiarism or fraudulent work will result in no grade being awarded for the course (an ‘X’ will be entered in the academic transcript).
