Information
Aims, contents and method of the course
This course is aimed at students who are particularly interested in late antiquity. Late antiquity has become a major field of research in its own right for historians, theologians, philologists, archaeologists, and other specialists. Interdisciplinarity has changed the way we view this era (the boundaries of which are disputed). The seminar takes an exemplary look at late antiquity and is also intended as an advanced seminar. The seminar will be structured as a mixture of presentations of research topics by participants and readings of recent publications. Suggestions for these include: Andreas Merkt, Die religiöse Verwandlung der Welt. Die Anfänge “moderner” Religion in der Spätantike (The Religious Transformation of the World: The Beginnings of “Modern” Religion in Late Antiquity), Freiburg 2024. Becker, Eve-Marie and Fürst, Alfons (eds.), Brief und Bildung: From Antiquity to Modernity, Berlin/Boston 2024. However, other titles may also be suggested. The focus is on discussion and the discovery of new texts and research questions. Short presentations are to be given. A chosen topic is to be presented in a poster presentation.
Assessment and permitted materials
The contributions to the discussion, the presentations, and the poster presentations will be graded with partial grades; each must be positive.
