Aims, contents and method of the course

In this course the theory of groups and rings will be developed, starting out from basic concepts of set theory and linear algebra. The focus will
lie on notions such as homomorphisms, normal subgroups (resp. ideals) and on the structure of particular groups (resp. rings).

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

On the one hand this course shall introduce some fundamental algebraic concepts, on the other hand it is aimed to enable the students to see several mathematical problems from an "algebraic point of view".
