Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

The content of this course are the basics of mathematics (terminology and fundamental ways of arguing): maps, sets, induction, binomial theorem, and similar things.

Assessment and permitted materials

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

The goal is to introduce newcomers to the basics of mathematical terminology (it might be also suitable for foreign students who just want to make themselves familiar with German terminology of basic
mathematical content), and to ensure a solid basis for the subsequent introductory courses in Linear Algebra and Analysis.

Examination topics

By providing suitable examples and discussing both elementary and more exciting/advanced examples and also emphasizing the value of
having exact definitions the students will be smoothly introduced in the world of (university) mathematics. The role of the standard mathematical terminology, and the fact that is is often a very compact and precise way of expression seemingly complicated facts will be highlighted.
