This course provides an overview on classification and taxonomy of prokaryotes, and introduces basic concepts of molecular taxonomy and phylogenetic sequence analysis. This knowledge is used in the practical course focussing on the software package ARB. ARB is a widely distributed program providing a software environment for comparative sequence analysis and phylogeny inference. Participants will learn how to use ARB, get detailed knowledge on basic principles of phylogenetic treeing methods, interpretation of phylogenetic data and trees, and computer-assisted development of oligonucleotide probes for in situ identification of prokaryotes.
