806850 UE Laboratory Safety I (2005S)

1 hour (1 credit): seminar, laboratory course.
Aims: Acquaintance of laboratory equipment and important laboratory operations and their risks. Avoiding hazards, handling dangerous situations, protective measures.
Contents: Glassware: Breakage of glass, danger of lacerations, moulding glass. Working with laboratory items: Heating, stirring, distillation, recrystallisation working with apparatus with ground glass joints. Working under reduced pressure (vacuo): Filtration, drying in desicators. Cryogenic materials. Highly compressed gases. Hazard warning signs, labelling and handling of hazardous materials. Personal safety equipment: saftey glasses, lab coat, gloves.
