The main objective of the exercise is to ensure and improve the capability of the participants in the interpretation of remotely sensed images for geological applications. The students will work together in small groups interpreting satellite data of areas showing different geomorphologic-, geologic- and tectonic setting and different climatic and morphologic conditions (Libya, Egypt, Tibet, Bhutan, USA). Digital image processing techniques are applied by the students to enhance the respective information content. Satellite image interpretation will focus on exploration applications, lithological mapping and natural hazard assessment. The exercise is good for 2.8 ECTS points. The examination will be done in the form of an open discussion based on the presented application examples and the results of the teamwork. Lecture notes including application examples and data are available for the students.
