This lecture series provides an introduction into the field of symbiosis research. Emphasis is laid on the evolution of symbiosis, seen today in the of the eukaryote cell as well as marine microbial symbiosis systems, such as bioluminescence, diazotrophic, photoautotrophic, thiotrophic, methanotrophic, methanogen, sulfate-reducing symbiosis, multi-partner associations and newly discovered symbiosis. The concept of symbiosis, classification and characteristics of associations, interactions between partners, and the ecological impact of symbiosis are discussed.
