The lecture tackles the relationship between aquatic microorganisms (bacteria, auto- & heterotrophic protists, viruses) and their environment as well as their adaptive strategies. The global role of microorganisms in material- and energy-fluxes of aquatic systems is addressed in particular using various examples. It covers also other relevant features like ecophysiology, bioenergetics, reproduction, motility etc. A particular emphasis is placed on all limnological aspects of microbial ecology.
