Aims, contents and method of the course

This lecture is focused to advanced teacher-students in mathematics. Its
content has a pure mathematical character, no didactics at all. But on the other hand the scientific field of the lecturer can not be suppressed all the time. Anyway, links to mathematical education in school are given,
because probability theory and statistics are one of the basic themes in school mathematics at secondary school level besides calculus and linear algebra. It is a fact that teacher students often mention after their studies that they have learned nothing at the university which they will
need in school afterwards. This conclusio should be avoided by two aspects presented in this lecture: first there will be discussed concrete contents which can be adopted unchanged to stochastic education in school. The second
important part of this lecture is to prepare background knowledge in probability theory and statistics for the future mathematics teachers. Its
availability is responsible for the quality of the teachers performance.

Concrete we will dicuss the probability concept with the three interpretations: as relative frequency, as relative rate and as rank of
confidence in a statement. Afterwards we will deal with the mathematical construction of a random variable and its description by various
distributions. Important attributes like characteristic parameters or some limit theorems should also be presented.

From Statistic themes we will choose some aspects of descriptive statistics and the two main fields of inference statistics: testing of hypotheses und parameter estimating (point estimation and confidence intervals). In this
case we will treat the classical point of view but also the Bayesian one (including statistical decision theory).

From time to time we will show connections between probability theory and statistics at the one hand and calculus or linear algebra at the other hand.

Literature will be presented at the beginning of the lecture.
