Aims, contents and method of the course

ECTS credits: 2
The class deals with the following topics: (1), the molecular basis and diagnosis of multidrug resistance (MDR) in anticancer therapy mediated by ATP-binding Cassette (ABC) membrane transporters. (2), The causes and mechanisms of multiple antibiotic, antifungal and antiparasitic drug resistance phenomena in infectious disease therapy. (3), Strategies to overcome MDR caused by ABC-mediated increased drug efflux. (4) Molecular mechanisms of genetic diseases caused by ABC genes implicated in cystic fibrosis, intrahepatic cholestasis, andrenoleukodystrophy, hypercholesterinemia through defects in HDL assembly, sitosterolemia, defects in hepatic detoxification.
