This lecture series provides an overview of the extreme marine environments deep-sea, hydrothermal vents, and cold seeps. Emphasis is laid on explaining the present state of knowledge of the habitats (geological, geographical, hydrological, and physico-chemical parameters), its characteristic microbial and organismal communities and their ecology. The evolution of selected characteristic organisms and its adaptations as well as the evolution and biogeography of the communities are discussed.Language: English (or German if chosen by students)
