This lecture series provides an overview on the current knowledge on microbial community composition and function in selected aquatic and terrestrial ecosystems. The importance of microorganisms for ecosystem functioning and elemental cycles will be highlighted. For example bacterial communities occurring in (i) terrestrial systems, (ii) wastewater treatment plants, and (iii) animals and humans will be discussed in detail. This lecture series will demonstrate how the application of modern molecular tools has revolutionized our perception of microbial ecology during the last decade.
