This lecture gives a survey on biochemical and/or chemical-physiological processes developed by higher plants to cope successfully with various ecological conditions. Starting from basic metabolism with respect to photosynthesis and energy conversion processes, water turn over, mineral and nitrogen nutrition, responses and/or adaptation strategies of higher plants to extreme and adverse environmental conditions are discussed; the topics considered are: elevated CO2, water and salt stress, heavy metals, limestone, silicate, nitrogen (including strategies for acquisition), and temperature stress. An additional chapter deals with anthropogenic stress conditions.
