Aims, contents and method of the course

Plate tectonic theory and continental drift science history; Marine magnetic anomalies & magnetic polarity timescale; Polar "wander"; modern & ancient plate motion rates and plate motions on a sphere; Seismology (Seismic waves, Earths structure & earthquakes); Oceanic lithosphere, bathymetry & heat flow, seismic & flexural thickness; Earthquake focal mechanisms for plate-growth, -destruction & "Alltag"; Mid-ocean ridges, oceanic crust and ophiolites; Subduction zones: geometry, seismicity, chemistry, as tectonic settings; Hot spots and "absolute" plate motions, mantle convection & thermal & mechanical models for plate tectonics.
