Aims, contents and method of the course

"Introduction to the biological biodiversity of Jordan." The area known als the "Levant", including Jordan, Syria, Israel, Lebanon and Turkey has been influenced by faunal and floral elements of different origin. For instance the biodiversity of Jordan is rather interesting because Palaearctic, Oriental and Sudanian elements meet here. Jordan participates in a wide range of climate, geological formations and soils within short distances from north to south and west to east. The landscape showes dramatical changes between the western mediterranean area and the basalt desert in the east, from the Dead See, the lowest point on earth to the rocky area of Wadi Rum close to the Saudi border.
The lecture is an introduction to the different landscapes and terrestrial as well as aquatic ecosystems including fauna and flora and should prepare the students for the traditional ecological excursion to Jordan in April 2005. It is prescribed as compulsory for all student participants. Besonders interessant
