The lecture focuses on te spatial diversity of Austria¿s plant cover. For each major physical landscape unit, i.e., Northern Gneiss and Granite Highland, Northern and Southeastern Foothills of the Alps, the Pannonian Basins and Hillsides, and the Austrian Alps, the relevant geological, geomorphological and climatic background, the altitudinal belts, and characteristic natural and anthropogenic vegetation units and vegetation patterns are presented. Furthermore, chrorological features, including the distribution of floristic elements, discjunt and endemic distributions are treated and connected to the geohistorical background.
